Introduction

I've been fortunate to have written several books over the last 10 years. Many of the books address favorite subjects like Afro-Cuban and Brasilian rhythms. My focus has always been to share ideas and concepts with others, with the view that learning these great rhythms can enhance your personal style. Many drummers and others have benefited greatly from studying about Afro-Caribbean rhythms. It might be time for you to check them out!

Part 1
Download some nice grooves for verse patterns of mambos.

Many of my students want to know what to play in a mambo style song. This may be for a gig situation, for a rehearsal band, or just to make sure they know what to play. Here are two grooves found in Book One that can help. Both of these grooves employ the sound of the maracas and clave, applied to the drumset.

Part 2

The second book in Chuck's Practical Applications: Using Afro-Caribbean Rhythms series uncovers the rhythms of Brasil. You will learn dozens of traditional and contemporary bossa nova and samba patterns, as well as six samba breaks that every Brasillian musician knows and that you can instantly apply to your own fills and solos.

The book also teaches the popular Colombian rhythm cumbia. It ends with transcriptions of some amazing timbale solos and ways of using parts of them in fills.

Book Three covers many ways of applying Songo, 6/8 Rhythms, and New York style Mozambique to the drum set. The focus with Book 3, as with the other books in this series, is the applications of the rhythms, to spice up your playing, make it more groove oriented and also more exciting!

Listen, you really should check out the original recording of this track. It's the bomb. Check out the bridge section, where the tempo sits right down in a mean pocket. But, in the meantime, here's the groove from The Funkmasters.

 

This book has been a labor of love and was almost five years in the making. The original idea was to transcribe the drum parts from my favorite James Brown songs like Sex Machine, Make It Funky, Super Bad, and others. I realized that drums without bass would be a mistake so the bass parts were added. Then, another realization; got to have the guitar parts. And so the book's new form was born. What has come to pass with this release from Manhattan Music is a real one-of-a-kind book. It's historical and anecdotal.

Following are some very brief examples from the book. Believe me, at 144 pages and 2 CDs, there's a lot more where this comes from!! Check the book out. It's bound to become a real Soul Classic!
