Wonderful Links to Music and Culture in
Salvador, Bahia, Brasil and to our hotel!

Our Curriculum and Daily Schedule is here

This is a "bloco" or percussion group, rehearsing for Carnaval. I'd say the average age was about 12 or so.

The famous group Olodum, performing in the Pelourinho district in Salvador.

Salvador is a thriving city of 4 million people. I was struck by the hustle and bustle.
There are miles and miles of beautiful beaches as well. I can't wait to go back!

Señor Bira Reis, our workshop coordinator. Bira was one of the members of Olodum and is very well respected in the
Bahian communty.

This is where our workshops will be held in Salvador. There's a good room for our classes, lots of instruments, and a warm, inviting, ambience.

Bira and Jahir, our drum set instructor.

The Creative School of Olodum, a special place in Salvador.

The African heritage runs very deep in Salvado. These are some of the
preparations for Carnaval.

I am just returning from a very fruitful trip to Salvador, Brasil. While there I organized my Drum and Percussion Workshops with a more hands on approach. With the help of two very good friends in Salvador, I was able to meet and discuss the workship goals with Señor Bira Reis, who, along with me, will be coordinating our curriculum. I visited various hotels near where we will study, looked at local restaurants, and also found out information about local shows and rehearsals.

Bira Reis, our teacher in Salvador, Bahia state, Brasil, has over twenty years of experience teaching percussion to individuals and groups from different parts of the world. We are also including a drum set component to our course. The course in total, over 2 weeks, will be 50 hours of instruction.

The program below is based on a two-week course (5h/day, Mon. — Fri.). The lessons will be structured in such a way so that you can attend whichever class you would like. For example, if you want to concentrate on hand percussion and forego the drumset part of the course, you'll be able to do just that.

PRICE: The price per person is based on double room occupancy at a 3-star hotel (steps from the school). The price will include hotel (double occupancy. there is a single occupancy price as well), transportation to/from airport, field trips, course fees, scooner trip in the bay, Salvador T-shirt, tour information package, transportation for some of the long distance field trips, and a "welcome" light lunch party on the arrival of group. One meal a day, breakfast, is included.

Please email me for the course price, which does not include you airfare to Salvador, Bahia state, Brasil.

CONTENT: Our course of Brazilian percussion is divided into three parts:

  • POPULAR PERCUSSION
  • AFRO-BRAZILIAN PERCUSSION
  • DRUM SET

This is an idea of some of the rhythms we will be studying and performing in Salvador.
